There are 10 airports that we have prepared in anticipation of a potential Mount Agung eruption located in Jakarta, Makassar, Surabaya, Balikpapan, Manado, Ambon, Solo, Praya, Kupang, and Banyuwangi. These ten airports will serve as alternative destinations for aircraft should Ngurah Rai Airport be closed due to volcanic ash from Mount Agung. This forms part of the government’s plan under the 10 Alternative Airport Prepared if Mount Agung Eruption,” said Budi Karya in a press statement received on Tuesday (12 September 2017).

However, Budi Karya hopes that the Mount Agung eruption will not cause severe impacts or disrupt flights to and from Ngurah Rai Airport, even though the government has prepared 10 alternative airports as part of the contingency plan outlined in the ‘10 Alternative Airport Prepared if Mount Agung Eruption’ program.

According to the (Menhub), estimated there are 5,000 passengers affected when Ngurah Rai airport was closed due to the eruption of Mount Agung.

In anticipation of this, the Minister of Transportation said that two plans had been prepared. The first plan is to divert passengers to the Banyuwangi and Praya routes, while the second plan is to arrange land transportation between Surabaya and Banyuwangi.

“The Ministry of Transportation has prepared 100 buses to transport passengers out of Bali, as well as to Surabaya and Banyuwangi via Praya, as part of the contingency measures under the 10 Alternative Airport Prepared if Mount Agung Eruption. Of the estimated 5,000 affected passengers, around 70 percent are expected to leave Bali, while the remaining 30 percent are Balinese passengers who do not require transportation support,” explained the Minister of Transportation.

For handling passengers after arriving at Surabaya, Banyuwangi, and Praya, the airlines will manage them individually. The Minister of Transportation added that the tenth airport is prepared as an alternative landing site for aircraft already en route to Bali, as part of the government’s 10 Alternative Airport Prepared if Mount Agung Eruption plan.

“So the aircraft would land at the airport closest to its current location or along its flight path. For example, if a plane is near Makassar, it will land there. AirNav will then handle the subsequent passenger transfers. This procedure is part of the government’s 10 Alternative Airport Prepared if Mount Agung Eruption plan,” said the Minister of Transportation.

In addition Menhub asks each airport authority coordinate with relevant agencies. “Each authority should coordinate with relevant agencies. For example if tourists should stay over because the incidence of the eruption of Mount Agung, then immigration should give help related extension of tourist visa. To smooth stuff help me ask that coordinate with the customs, “said Budi Karya.

Present at the meeting were representatives from the coordinating Secretary of the Air Transportation Praminto Ditjen Hadi, Ngurah Rai Airport Authority Herson, Plt. Ground Transportation Ditjen Hindro Surahmat, President Director of PT Angkasa Pura I Danang Baskoro, Director of Novie AirNav Arwana, and airline representatives.
